Peterson Rich Office collaborated with Future Expansion Architects in response to the 2013 FAR ROC [For a Resilient Rockaway] competition to revitalize a Rockaway site damaged by Hurricane Sandy. In a conscious break from past patterns the proposal eschews the tendency of coastal development to build on the best and most beautiful plots of land, which diminishes the value of natural systems and many of the attributes that make these places desirable homes. A row of street front commercial and community buildings along Edgemere Ave. is integrated with raised housing. This leaves 75% of the site undeveloped and allows layers of indigenous landscapes to make the site an adaptive edge.
